WordPress Development Agency
Bespoke builds, no page builders.
Custom WordPress development — bespoke themes written for the site, plugins where functionality genuinely belongs in the CMS, headless builds, and rescues of sites buried under accumulated plugins.
We build bespoke WordPress — themes written for the site rather than bought and bent into shape, custom blocks and plugins, and headless builds with a React or Next.js front end. No page builders, because the performance cost and the lock-in both outlive the convenience.
A WordPress site usually degrades the same way. It starts on a purchased theme, which covers 80% of the requirement. The remaining 20% arrives as plugins — one for forms, one for sliders, one for custom fields, one to fix what another broke. Two years later every page loads forty assets, nobody knows which plugin owns which behaviour, and updating anything is a risk nobody wants to take.
- Every plugin is a dependency you inherit — security, updates, performance and all.
- A bespoke theme is often cheaper over three years than a purchased one plus the plugins it needs.
- Page builders are quick to start with and expensive to leave.
- If an editor needs a developer for a routine change, the build has failed however it looks.
What we build
- Bespoke themes with custom Gutenberg blocks, so editors compose pages from components built for your content.
- Custom plugins where behaviour genuinely belongs in the CMS rather than bolted onto a theme.
- Headless WordPress — familiar admin, a separate front end over REST or GraphQL.
- WooCommerce work where the shop needs more than configuration.
- Performance rescues on sites carrying years of accumulated plugins.
- Migrations from other platforms, with redirect mapping that preserves rankings.
- Security hardening and managed updates.
Frequently asked questions
Why not just use Elementor or Divi?
For a simple site assembled quickly, they are a reasonable choice and we will say so. For anything you intend to keep and grow, they add markup weight that shows in Core Web Vitals, make content hard to reuse elsewhere, and are difficult to leave once the site is built around them. The block editor with custom blocks gives editors the same control without that.
How much does a bespoke WordPress site cost?
Typically £10,000–£30,000 for a bespoke marketing site, more where there is genuine application logic, ecommerce or integration work. The variables are the number of distinct templates and how much functionality is custom rather than configured.
Can you rescue our existing site?
Usually, and usually without a rebuild. It starts with an audit establishing what the plugins are actually doing, what is unused, and what is load-bearing. A substantial share of WordPress performance problems resolve by removing things rather than adding them.
Do we own the theme?
Entirely, on payment, with the repository and documentation. Nothing is licensed back to you and nothing stops another developer maintaining it.
How the engagement runs
- Scoping call, then discovery. We establish what you actually need before quoting. You approve scope before we write a line of code.
- Fixed price or capped time and materials. Tightly specified work suits a fixed price; genuinely new work suits a capped retainer. We recommend one rather than offering both and letting you guess.
- Weekly demos. You see working software every week, so nothing surprising turns up at the end.
- You own everything. Repositories, infrastructure and documentation transfer to you on payment. No vendor lock-in, no licensing you do not control.
- NDA as standard, usually before the first detailed call. We will often send one ourselves if you do not.
If you are planning work of this kind and want a straight assessment of scope, timeline and cost, tell us what you are building. We work with clients across the UK, EU and US.
