Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) Services

Get cited, not just ranked.

Generative engine optimisation is the work of getting your business cited inside AI-generated answers. We audit what the engines can currently see, fix the entity and structure problems, and track citations monthly against a fixed prompt set.

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) Services
Quick answer

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is making your business likely to be named in an AI-generated answer. Where SEO competes for a position on a results page, GEO competes to be one of the handful of sources a model draws on when it writes the answer instead. The levers are consistency, structure, corroboration and genuinely quotable material.

The shift is simple to state and awkward to deal with. Someone researching a supplier used to compare ten blue links. Now they read one paragraph that names three companies. There is no second page, no scrolling past a competitor, and no way to buy your way in. Either the model has reason to name you, or the research finishes without you in it.

Key takeaways
  • Models assemble answers from sources they retrieve and trust — not from a ranking you can pay into.
  • Contradictory facts across your site, directories and register entries actively suppress citation.
  • Original data nobody else has is the strongest single asset: it gives engines a reason to quote you specifically.
  • Being listed in other people’s comparison posts matters disproportionately — models lean on them heavily.

How we approach it

  • Baseline first. We agree 20–30 prompts a real buyer would type, run them across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and AI Overviews, and record exactly who gets named today. Without that, every later claim of improvement is unfalsifiable.
  • Entity reconciliation. One set of facts everywhere — site, JSON-LD, llms.txt, Companies House, LinkedIn, directories, review sites.
  • A coherent schema graph. Organization, Service, Product, FAQPage and Article nodes that reference each other properly instead of sitting as disconnected fragments.
  • Retrievability. AI crawler permissions, an llms.txt that describes the business accurately, clean HTML, and no important content locked behind JavaScript.
  • Citable content. Answer-first sections, comparison tables, defensible figures, and primary sources cited in the text.
  • Corroboration. Directory and review-site presence, and a route into the third-party lists the engines already quote.
  • Monthly measurement against the original prompt set, reported as movement rather than vibes.

What makes a page quotable

SignalWhy it matters to a model
A direct answer in the first 60 wordsGives a self-contained passage that can be lifted without the surrounding article
Specific numbersConcrete figures are quoted far more readily than adjectives
Comparison tablesStructured rows survive extraction where prose does not
Named, verifiable entityLets the model corroborate you against other sources and resolve who you are
Cited primary sourcesRaises the chance the page is treated as a reliable source rather than marketing
None of this is exotic. It is mostly writing clearly and being consistent about facts.

An honest word on the state of the field

GEO is new enough that confident claims should be treated carefully, including ours. No engine publishes a ranking system. Results vary between models, between phrasings of the same question, and between weeks. Anyone quoting you a guaranteed citation rate is describing something they cannot control.

What is defensible is this: the practices above make a site easier to retrieve, parse, corroborate and quote. They are the same practices that make a site genuinely clearer for a human reader, which is why they are worth doing even if a given engine changes its behaviour next quarter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes to be one of the sources a model uses when it writes an answer instead of showing that list. They share foundations, but GEO weights entity consistency, extractable structure and third-party corroboration much more heavily.

Does llms.txt actually work?

It is an emerging convention rather than a standard any engine commits to honouring, and it should be treated as cheap insurance rather than a lever. Generating it from the site’s own content costs almost nothing and guarantees a clean, accurate summary exists if a crawler does read it. We publish one here.

How do you measure GEO?

A fixed prompt set, agreed with you, run monthly across the major engines, logging whether you were named, in what position, and what was said about you. Fixed prompts matter: changing the questions between runs makes the trend meaningless.

Is it worth doing for a small business?

Often more so than for a large one. Answer engines are not weighted towards brand size the way classic search is, and a small specialist with clear, consistent, well-structured information can be named alongside far larger competitors.

How the engagement runs

  • Scoping call, then discovery. We establish what you actually need before quoting. You approve scope before we write a line of code.
  • Fixed price or capped time and materials. Tightly specified work suits a fixed price; genuinely new work suits a capped retainer. We recommend one rather than offering both and letting you guess.
  • Weekly demos. You see working software every week, so nothing surprising turns up at the end.
  • You own everything. Repositories, infrastructure and documentation transfer to you on payment. No vendor lock-in, no licensing you do not control.
  • NDA as standard, usually before the first detailed call. We will often send one ourselves if you do not.

If you are planning work of this kind and want a straight assessment of scope, timeline and cost, tell us what you are building. We work with clients across the UK, EU and US.
