Google AI Overviews: How to Get Your Pages Cited
AI Overviews are generated summaries shown above the results, with links to the sources used. Google has said they draw on its existing index and ranking systems — so ranking well remains the foundation. What gets a page cited beyond that is extractable structure, specificity and the ability to answer a sub-question cleanly.
The practical consequence is less dramatic than the discourse suggests. This is not a separate index you optimise for in isolation — it sits on top of the one you already compete in. A site that does not rank is not going to be cited; a site that ranks but buries its answer frequently is not either.
- Overviews draw on the existing index. Ranking is still the entry ticket.
- They answer sub-questions. Pages structured around one question each get cited more.
- Expect informational traffic to fall and the remaining clicks to be better qualified.
- Being cited is a brand and authority asset even when the click does not follow.
What actually gets pulled
An Overview typically decomposes a query into parts and assembles an answer from several sources, each covering one part. That shapes what to write: a page that answers one question thoroughly and unambiguously is more citable than a page that covers ten topics adequately. Breadth helps rankings; precision helps citation.
- A direct answer near the top of the section, not buried under context.
- Specific figures. Numbers survive extraction; adjectives do not.
- Clean headings matching the sub-questions people ask.
- Tables and lists, which lift cleanly into a summary.
- Something only you can say — original data, real prices, operational detail.
What to do about the traffic you lose
Some informational traffic is going, and no amount of optimisation returns it. The useful response is to shift effort toward queries where a summary cannot complete the job — comparisons where the reader needs to see the detail, cost questions where they want your specific numbers, and decisions where they need to evaluate a supplier rather than learn a fact.
That is also the traffic that was converting. Pages built purely to capture definitional queries were always the weakest part of a content programme; Overviews have made that visible rather than caused it.
Frequently asked questions
Can we opt out of AI Overviews?
Only by using the nosnippet family of controls, which also removes your normal snippets — so in practice the choice is between appearing in both or neither. For almost every business that trade is not worth making.
Does being cited send traffic?
Some, and less than a top-three ranking used to. The citation is still worth having: it is a visible credibility signal at the moment of research, and for commercial queries the reader frequently clicks the named source rather than accepting the summary.
Is there schema that helps?
Nothing Google has confirmed as an Overview-specific signal. Accurate structured data helps engines understand a page, which is worth doing regardless — but treat anyone promising specific markup that guarantees inclusion with scepticism.
How do we track it?
Search Console does not separate Overview impressions, so tracking means running your key queries manually on a schedule and recording who is cited. Tedious, and currently the only honest method.
This work overlaps heavily with answer engine optimisation and GEO.
